In this episode of Drunk Ex-Pastors we revisit the topic of cultural misappropriation, discussing how dope it is when white people use black lingo, fo shizzle. We springboard from the legitimate connection between mental ill-health and mass shootings to the illegitimate way people of a certain political persuasion use that fact (*cough*Republicans*cough*), and then take a caller’s question about why evangelicals stopped hating Mormons all of a sudden (what a waste, they were such easy targets). We then turn our attention to the sad plight of holocaust survivor Emily Ratajkowski—wait, did we say “holocaust survivor”? We meant incredibly beautiful millionaire model who STILL hasn’t won on Oscar despite being 24 years old and having had supporting roles in two whole movies (don’t laugh, it’s hard for her!). We weigh in on Barry Bonds’s charge of racism toward rich white kids who act black, which is straight-up whack, and then consider what it might be like to have a President whose spouse totally has orgies with sex slaves (true story). Our “Dick Move, God” segment teaches us that it’s OK to stab your kids if it gets you off the hook for lying, and finally, Christian is biebered by the apparent black hole into which his kitchen items get sucked, while Jason’s bieber has to do with how hard it is to operate windshield wipers.
Also, too many silent pauses? That’s
ridiculous.

A couple things- 1st-great episode, 2nd- I totally cracked up with the pilot voice mail because I knew you guys missed the sarcasm a few weeks ago and was shocked you didn’t catch it! 😉 3rd- one really good example of cultural misappropriation I’ve heard is baby wearing. It has been a part of African culture forever but in the last few years we’ve adopted it here(which isn’t the problem) but you now have wealthy white women teaching classes on it and acting like its this great thing we do for our babies, and it’s trendy. I’m a part of the white baby wearing culture and never thought about it until I read an article on it. It’s not that I can’t wear my baby but having an attitude of superiority like we’re the best moms all of a sudden because we’re so “attached” is a problem, especially when cultures in Africa have been looked down on in the past. Anywho kinda long rant and not too important but that example was eye opening and important for me. Last thing- I love the dick move God segment. I’m not sure how people stay Christians though after reading the bible, the more I read, the more ill it made me 😜

• What your show has meant to me is that I’m probably not on CCBC’s list of most disappointing alumni. You guys have really set the bar high, and I feel I have to step up my game. Maybe write an atheist best seller or run for Congress on a platform of forcing all Christians to get gay married or something.
• I suppose I should say that what it has actually meant for me is to let me know that I’m not alone. I’m not the only one who left fundamentalism. Not the only one who had doubts. Not the only one who slowly realized just how much he had been lied to by probably well-meaning people, but lied to all the same.
• Well, the Calvinist God is a dick and an asshole that created billions of sentient people just so He could foreordain them to torture forever.
• I hear you, but still… white guys with dreadlocks = douche. You can’t argue with the math.
• The fundamentalist perspective is that Mormonism is a cult and the vast majority of Mormons are going to hell. Catholics too. Whore of Babylon and all.
• Rejected PR campaigns from the Mormons:
o “The Church of Latter Day Saints… sort of okay with black people since 1977.”
o “The Church of Latter Day Saints… we were for biblical marriage from the start…until the US government made us get rid of polygamy.”
o “The Church of Latter Day Saints… honestly all religion is probably bullshit, but we have a sort of cool story about white Native American Jews being slaughtered by those non-white Native Americans in our scriptures.”
o “The Church of Latter Day Saints… we’re the Diet Pepsi of religions.”
• It’s hard to be beautiful. It’s even harder to be homely. Trust me.
• This was all an excuse just to look at and talk about boobies, wasn’t it?
• You think that way because that is how these actresses and models are largely presented. That is the package that is marketed and sold. Beautiful girl. Love interest. Hot action star. Skin tight costumes or dresses. They aren’t marketing their intelligence or good moral character or inner thoughts.
• That’s the thing. We don’t know these people. We just know the image that is sold to us. So if she wants to complain that we’re not seeing the real her, well… duh. We don’t know you. We know the prepackaged, marketed, shallow you that is sold to us. That applies to men and women working in the entertainment industry.
• The one I remember is “Nobody wants a smelly used old shoe.”
• Actually, when I think of someone who started out as a Disney teen star, I think it’s just a matter of time before they have a meltdown or release a sex video.
• Hey, Denise Richards played a nuclear physicist, so pretty girls can get good (and unintentionally hi-larious) roles.
• It’s harder for women than for men, in general, no matter the field.
• Which is why it’s awesome to be a straight, white, Christian man in America. I highly recommend it if you can do it.
• *Cough* steroids…
• They probably aren’t racist, well, anymore than any of us are racist. They’re probably just being teenage douchebags. I was a teenage douchebag once. I grew out of it. Most of them will too. And the ones that don’t will become libertarians or Fox News personalities.
• These kids and their filthy music today. Whatever happened to the good, wholesome music I grew up with like “I want your sex”?
• Going Bill Cosby has a completely different meaning these days.
• It depends on how you quote someone. Quoting Hitler as a means of explaining the history of World War II = okay. Quoting Hitler because you think he had some good ideas about the Jews -= racist.
• Those people who are independents still tend to vote conservative Republican or liberal Democrat.
• I was a conservative Independent, but I still voted straight Republican. Sometimes I’d throw in a libertarian or Constitution party candidate, but it was mostly Republicans I would vote for.
• I’m going to skip ahead because I am so tired of politics right now.
• Yes, telling a kid that he or she can use the bathroom that makes them feel the most comfortable is something Satan would do. No… wait, that’s not something Satan would do at all.
• You get to borrow for free if you are an investment bank.
• I would check your kids’ rooms, under the bed, closets, under piles of stuff. You’ll probably find a few missing pieces filled with three year old moldy sandwiches and decomposing apples.
• We never work less. Any extra benefit always goes to the top of the food chain.

For the cultural appropriation, I think you guys missed one thing the caller said, which is where I believe the anger and/or frustrations come from. It’s more when there is something that the dominant culture ridiculed and judged the other culture about for years. Then when somebody from the dominant cultures does that thing, it’s now cool and popular.
Disclaimer, I’m a white male and struggle to understand this as well!
Christian Kingery
Yeah, I need to go back and listen to the voice mail again. I’m a bit disappointed in ourselves…
Good example with the baby wearing. From the examples we’re hearing, it sounds like the problem is more the attitude behind it, which is a problem, because thinking that any new thing is something we came up with is sort of an aspect of America’s personality.
Christian Kingery
This was all an excuse just to look at and talk about boobies, wasn’t it?
That was pretty much my response to Jason when he said, “Hey, let’s talk about @emrata.”

classic example of cultural misappropriation is christmas. and i’m not talking about the mythological current war on christmas. i’m talking about its original incarnation when a pope (i assume it was a pope) co-opted the pagans’ winter solstice to commemorate the baby jesus. i may only be a white male, but i’m totally indifferent to pagans’ bitching on this one.

You guys missed the sarcasm because Steven has a great voice and so you couldn’t hear the sarcasm – it’s kind of like not being able to take attractive women seriously.
Content note: this is not sarcasm but it’s also not serious. Except the part about Steven having a great voice.

I think you guys are right on the evangelicals and politics issue. What I don’t get is the need to engage in culture wars. I can’t see where that comes out of the bible. I get how Christians feel that they’re called to be separate from non-Christians. If I’m an evangelical Christian I certainly need to refrain from gay marrying and having an abortion, and I need to try to convert others to my faith. But forcing my practices on people who haven’t converted makes no sense, because even if they refrain from “sinful” practices by virtue of the fact that I’ve legislated it onto them, they’re still going to hell unless they’ve accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior or been baptized or whatever your church requires.
And I’m not an expert on the Mormon church (despite having watched The Godmakers as a teen) but my understanding is that all adult men in the church are considered to be priests. Then they have bishops and prophets who are the leadership of the church. I think the deal with black Mormons is that you couldn’t be a full member and be called to the priesthood, so you could never attain whatever level of heaven it is where you become a god and get your own planet. Incidentally, that’s the point where you get to decide whether you’re bringing your wife into heaven with you, so the wives damn well better be nice to their husbands and keep their mouths shut or they won’t get into heaven. Then again, all the women do in the celestial world is crank out babies so maybe it’s cool to get left behind? I think another part of the racial issue came out of the fact that there were originally brown and white native Americans, and the brown ones were evil while the white ones were good (bet you didn’t see that one coming).
All of this just demonstrates that most religions were invented by men.
Chris Fisher
American Evangelicals also tend to unconsciously see America as neo-Israel. Thus any national drifting away from their literalist interpretation of the bible and morality is an affront to Yahweh and invites national judgment and plagues and angry retribution.
For the more cynical ‘Christian’, it’s about Christian supremacy, specifically white Christian supremacy. They fear losing influence, money, or their station to a changing culture.
Christian Kingery
LOL! He does have a good voice. 🙂

I don’t think Jephthah could break his vow or his family probably would have been destroyed anyway, and he would have ended up covered in boils or locusts or something.
Mike
I would watch the documentary “American Jesus” for an interesting perspective on Christianity and politics in America.

I think its time to revisit a topic that stopped being discussed months ago.
Black Lives Matter
You guys sided with the outrage claiming that systematic racism was the cause of all these horrible murders. But since then, the verdicts have come back…… to my knowledge not one single conviction. At all. Zero. The police were acquitted in each and every high profile case. Time for a retraction? Or sticking to your “guns”?
Further, criminal justice academics are now blaming whats called the “Ferguson effect” for a random dramatic increase in murder across the U.S.A. The idea is that police are scared to proactively stop suspicious citizens which leads to a higher crime rate. Bill O’Reilly led off with this last night and it caught my attention.

Two things:
1. You think that police officers being acquitted when killing black people is a sign that we do not have a problem with systemic racism?
2. Do you think there is not a problem with police brutality?
Kenneth Winsmann
a article by Vox interviews a “ferguson effect” skeptic that was persuaded by the evidence

1. Yes. In Baltimore Mosby bent over backwards to criminalize the police involved. There was political pressure left and right to produce a conviction. If you live in Baltimore who exactly is it that says black lives dont matter? The majority black police force? The black city council? The black districts attorney? The nations black attorney general? Their black president? Its just becoming absurd and i think in light of the way those trials have been carried out its time for you both to reconsider your original position.
2. Police discipline can always be improved. But that has very little to do with black lives matter.
Freddie Grey, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner……..innocent, innocent, innocent, innocent. Its OJ Simpson all over again. Wrong side of history on this one guys
Christian Kingery
Freddie Grey, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner……..innocent, innocent, innocent, innocent.
Exactly. We have a huge problem.

So this doctor just entered into the abortion debate and is being promoted all over the place at the moment. His videos are viral.
The man has an interesting story. He was an abortionist for years until his daughter was killed in an automobile accident. Something about the experience jarred him and he was unable to perform abortions in his clinic any longer. But he isn’t famous for the story. Its his videos that are making rounds. Game changer or nah?

I will. I still haven’t watched the Amy Winehouse documentary, which I really want to see, but this will be next on my list. It’s funny how coming from an evangelical background makes the topic endlessly interesting, even when you’ve moved on years ago.
